Domain Names and Registration

Check to see if the name you want is available and then register it. These services are provided by accredited registrars as well as most Web hosting companies and some development companies, often at a reduced rate. If you register through a Web hosting company, you are usually required to sign a hosting contract with them. Discount registrations may have strings attached so examine the contract closely. We suggest using a registrar accredited by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which can be verified in the Accredited Registrar Directory listed below. Please note that many companies offering these services are resellers working with accredited registrars, so be sure to check before registering. There are dozens more accredited registrars than the two listed below, they just happen to be the two largest.

  • Network Solutions  Historically, the first company to provide domain name registration services, now part of VeriSign.
  • Register.com  Another large accredited and reliable registrar.

  • Accredited Registrar Directory  The list of ICANN accredited registrars.
  • FAQ - Domain Names, Registrars, Registration  Frequently Asked Questions about domain names, registrars, the registration process, the new top-level domains (.biz, .info, .name) and other related topics. Provided as a public service by InterNic (U.S. Department of Commerce) in association with ICANN.
  • ICANN  The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Responsible for IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, root server system management and accreditation of domain name registrars.
  • What Is the Domain Name System  A non-technical explanation of how the domain name system works on the Internet ... in case you're interested. Provided by InterNic.
  • WhoIs  Search the registration records to find out who owns a domain name.

Web Hosting Companies

There are thousands of Web hosting companies, large and small. Some are very good at their business while others are not. You may find that some of the low-priced and smaller operators are fine until you need technical assistance ... then find out they have no tech support or their staff is stretched too thin. As with domain name services, many of the smaller players are actually resellers for the larger players. At Blue Buzzsaw we understand the critical nature of Web hosting services and the staff necessary to properly operate, maintain and support them. We believe these services are best provided by Web hosting specialists with direct or near-direct high-speed connections to the Internet backbone. We don't list any particular Web hosts here but the links below are definitely helpful and, if you're unfamiliar with Web hosting, we strongly urge you to read the white papers.

Search Engines and Optimization

The term "search engine" is used loosely to refer to both search engines and Web directories. The difference is that a search engine uses an automated software program called a "spider" or "robot" to examine or "crawl through" Web pages to index or otherwise "discover" them. A directory only finds and indexes sites based on manual submissions and the process is handled by people, not software. Hundreds of search engines exist but statistics show that only about the top 20 engines are used by the majority of Web users. Several top search engines are listed here but you will find a more complete list of major and minor search engines at either of the two search engine resource sites listed below. There is also a summary paper on the subject of Search Engine Optimization.

  • AltaVista  One of the oldest search engines on the Web. It has a large index of Web pages and a wide range of power searching commands.
  • Ask Jeeves  Human-powered search service that aims to direct you to the exact page that answers your question.
  • Google  A top choice for Web searchers, it offers the largest collection of Web pages of any crawler-based search engine and is known for its high relevancy. Our personal favorite.
  • Lycos  Started out as a search engine but in 1999 became a directory similar to Yahoo!.
  • LookSmart  Human-compiled directory of Web sites. In addition to being a stand-alone service, LookSmart provides directory results to MSN Search, Excite and many others.
  • MSN Search  Microsoft's search service is a LookSmart-powered directory of Web sites, with secondary results from others.
  • Yahoo!  The Web's oldest major directory (1994) and the most popular search service. It is the largest human-compiled guide to the Web. Yahoo supplements its results with those from Google.

  • Search Engines, Meta Tags and Optimization  Believe it or not, search engines can be your number one marketing tool. Summary paper located on this Web site.
  • Search Engine Showdown  Compares and evaluates Internet search engines from the searcher's perspective.
  • Search Engine Watch  This is an excellent site that provides tips and information about searching the Web, analysis of the search engine industry and help to site owners trying to improve their ability to be found in search engines. Lists all the major and minor engines.

Web Site Design and Development

There are dozens of good resource sites and we all have our favorites, depending upon our particular niche ... designer, developer, programmer, graphic artist, etc.. However, this resource page is intended more for clients than for those actively involved in the business of designing and developing Web sites. With that in mind, we will provide a small sampling of such sites and also a few links to articles or subject matter that, hopefully, may be of some interest. We will try to refresh this section with new links from time to time.

  • Definitive Webmaster  Over 3,500 links to sites and articles concerning the design, creation and marketing of successful Web sites. If you can't find it here, it may not exist.
  • Dynamic Drive  One of the premier places on the net to obtain DHTML scripts and components to enhance Web sites. The latest in JavaScript and DHTML technology.
  • Macromedia ®  An industry leader in Web authoring software that enables Web professionals to design and develop dynamic Web content and applications that can be delivered to multiple platforms and devices.
  • Deep Space Web  A graphic arts site with very good Photoshop® tutorials and other bits of information useful to Web site developers.
  • webmonkey  The Web developer's resource site. Articles, references and insights on the Web industry.

  • The Web-Safe Color Dilemma  A good article from lynda.com on this subject. The Web-safe palette of 216 colors was designed in the age of the 256 color (8 bit) video card. These days the vast majority of computers are capable of millions of colors (24 bit). Does the Web-safe palette still have relevance? You can also view the color palette here.
